Dependancy on cellphones much?

So this morning I decided to be “cool” and get the latest iPhone software before it gets released next week. Planning later to complete the activation process at work, I forgot a crucial fact: the iPhone needs the iTunes store in order to activate. So here I am, iPhone-less until as late as possibly 3:30/4pm EST.

While talking about this with my friend Sarah, our conversation on the subject ended with:

me: iunno
feels just strange is all
wonder if i can make it to 3 without it
i’m having doubts

Sarah: lol
the world is not going to end

me: it could
and i would be the last to know!

While it sounds stupid, I’ve become incredibly dependant on my iPhone, which I’m sure would be the case also for most smartphones. At my beck and call I have a wealth of information available to me, most of it I can access faster and easier than I could on a computer, because, lets face it, there is probably an app for it. Could I ever go back to a regular cellphone? Probably, but it would have to be cold turkey, otherwise I don’t think it would stick. Gimme the juice iPhone!!

Aside from this incident though, how often do we rely on cellular phones now? I’ll never forget when my mother tried to make a case to me for my then 13 year old sister getting a cellphone. My mother’s argument was akin to “what happens if she needs to call for a ride home from school???” To which my response was “…… wtf do you think we did?” (for the record it was the classic “collect call from: mom come pick me up“)

Cellphones have become such a major part of our daily lives, that sometimes, we forget or have a hard time remembering what we did without them. Sort of like the internet, because, really, who uses libraries anymore?
